I’m SwanShadow. Hi.
Welcome to the new (I’ll let you decide whether it’s improved) SwanShadow Thinks Out Loud!
After mounting frustration with Blogger, SSTOL permanently relocated to WordPress, effective May 2009. Pretty spiffy, huh?
All of the posts from our first five years will remain indefinitely in their present location, so you’ll be able to revisit them to your heart’s content.
Note that along with the move comes a new URL:
Please be sure to update your bookmarks!
So… who is this SwanShadow guy, anyway?
I’m a father, a writer, a voice actor, a professional raconteur, a teacher, a pop culture analyst, a baseball fanatic, a trivia maven, a student of comic book history (especially Golden, Silver, and Bronze Age superhero comics), a collector of original comic art, and a second tenor in a world-class a cappella chorus.
I was also an undefeated champion on Jeopardy!, back before guys like Ken Jennings, Brad Rutter, and Roger Craig made it look easy.
I’m not really a big “causes” guy, but if you visit here often enough, you’ll eventually find me promoting breast cancer awareness. My beloved and loving first wife, usually referred to herein as KJ, died of this scourge on July 5, 2010. She was 44 years old, and had been battling her cancer with grace and courage for the last 10 of those years. If my flying an occasional pink ribbon contributes to the saving of even one woman’s life, my existence will have been justified.
The regulars here call me Uncle Swan. Feel welcome to do likewise.
In fact… just feel welcome!

Hi,
(sorry to put this here but I couldn’t figure out how to email you directly)
I wanted to reach out given that you had written about Alicia Parlette previously; my name is Juliet and I am a friend of Alicia’s.
Her health has recently taken a turn for the worst and her friends have set up a site to keep track of her health condition (which is not good) and solicit donations to cover her medical expenses. The site is located here: http://www.msparlette.com.
Thanks for your interest in Alicia’s health and story.
Best,
Juliet

Hello there!
I found your great blog through your Taarna gallery as I was trying to communicate to a friend how truly great an accomplishment the original Heavy Metal was. Taarna is one of my favourite animated works ever made, and I just wanted to say, it’s a really awesome idea to have a gallery of original Taarna art.
I wanted to ask if you’d like a Taarna pic from me? I’m not a Marvel/DC creator but I have been working in comics for over 10 years now. I do mainly small-press and underground things, but I have a great love for the subject.
If you’d like, I’d do it for just a kind link and perhaps a kind word…I’m trying very hard to promote my work as my studio’s creators have just moved to a new host and are trying to pick things back up.
Please do let me know, if you’re interested! I always say that people with even a little in common should stick together. 🙂
Thanks so much again. I check my email regularly so if you want to do so, I’d be so happy to hear from you.
Sincerely,
Hushicho
